New Associates

Our attorneys are proud to serve as business and legal advisers to our clients. Associates joining us enjoy a broad range of opportunities beyond our many different practice areas, industry groups and office locations. Your experience is enhanced and expanded at a rate many times faster than many large firms through almost-immediate exposure to clients and real-world matters. You can expect to collaborate with attorneys who are valued by their clients as respected advisers and community leaders.

We have an ongoing professional development program that provides:

  • insight into the business of law,
  • strategies and tips for career development and
  • continuing legal education credits on everything from ethical requirements to cutting-edge practice areas.

These programs are designed to introduce you to other areas of the firm and its practices, broadening your understanding of our capabilities and enhancing client relationships.

Summer Law Clerk Program

We are no longer accepting applications for the 2024 Summer Law Clerk Program. We will post more details about the 2025 Summer Program soon.

Our Summer Law Clerk Program is crafted to introduce you to the firm and its high-quality collegial environment. Our culture of teamwork and collaboration is why we stand out as a place where attorneys come to build not only their skills, but also their careers. Your experience with us will enhance your understanding of the application of the law in many settings and circumstances as well as bring your vision of what life as an attorney is like into sharper focus. The program’s mentoring and constructive feedback on your assignments will add to your skills and development.

Beyond the exposure to real-world matters, the Summer Law Clerk Program includes opportunities to socialize and get to know both your peers, other attorneys and firm leaders.

Law School and On-Campus Interview (OCI) Recruiting Information

During the on-campus fall recruiting season, we interview second- and third-year law students for positions in most of our offices. We partner with many law schools across the country. We encourage students to speak with their career services team and submit their applications through the law school placement office when possible.

If we are not an official OCI participant, write-in applications will be accepted. Applications for write-in candidates typically open in June. Additional details regarding how to apply as a write-in candidate will be updated at a later date. If you have any questions in the meantime, please contact Jesse Tenorio, Recruiting Coordinator, at jtenorio@bsk.com. Application materials generated by artificial intelligence (AI) will not be accepted.

Bond, Schoeneck & King is an equal employment opportunity employer and welcomes candidates who can enhance our diversity. Learn more about Bond’s diversity initiatives.

Bond, Schoeneck & King OCI FAQs

Q: Does every office hire Summer Law Clerks?
A: No. Typically, the following Bond offices* hire at least one summer law clerk: Albany, Buffalo, Garden City, Melville, NYC, Rochester, Syracuse, White Plains, NY & Naples, FL. *This is subject to change.

Q: What is the size of the Summer Class?
A: It depends. Usually, classes range from 10-17 in total. Our downstate (and Naples, FL) offices are much smaller in size compared to our Upstate offices. Therefore, the smaller offices tend to have fewer seats available (and not all practice areas are represented). It’s common for smaller offices to only accept one Summer Law Clerk. Our largest office is in Syracuse, NY.

Q: How do I apply for Bond’s Summer Law Clerk Program?
A: We partner with several law schools and students are encouraged to formally apply through their school’s OCI program. We encourage students to speak with their career services office for more information.

Q: Can I apply to Bond’s Summer Program if I don’t attend an OCI school?
A: Yes, if we are not registered to attend your school’s OCI program, you can apply as a write-in candidate by applying through our applicant tracking system. We will update this website when the application opens. We typically begin accepting write-in application materials from rising 2L students in June, and our interviewing process typically concludes in September. Students are encouraged to specify their preferred office location(s) in their cover letter.

Q: Does Bond allow split summers?
A: We strongly encourage summer law clerks to select one office to take full advantage of all planned activities.

Q: Will I be assigned to a specific practice area?
A: Bond has a free-flowing assignment system that allows summer law clerks to work on projects from a variety of practice areas and partners.

Q: What types of training programs are provided to summer law clerks?
A: All summer law clerks go through two days of orientation (in Syracuse, NY) when they first join the firm. Additionally, we conduct weekly video conferences. Topics and training vary from week to week and cover a variety of substantive and practice areas.

Q: Does Bond hire 1Ls for its Summer Law Clerk Program?
A: Yes. Each year, we assess the needs of our offices and determine where we will be able to hire 1L students through The M. Catherine Richardson Clerkship Program. Applications are typically due the end of January. Visit our website to learn more.

Practice Areas

We have 34 practice and industry areas consisting of attorneys who have experience and/or a common interest in these practice or industry areas. They collaborate to share information, assist each other in serving clients and market our experience. An attorney may belong to more than one practice and industry. Participation is an excellent way for less-experienced attorneys to learn about other practices, to decide upon an area that interests them and to foster relationships with attorneys and clients who are involved in that practice.

Training

We provide training for new associates in a variety of forms, all designed to give you a solid foundation in the practical aspects of practicing law.

We have a thorough orientation program for new attorneys. The program is intended to introduce you to all facets of the firm and its members. During your first six months with us, you generally rotate through Business Law, Labor and Employment Law, Litigation, Property and Trust and Estate allowing you to become acquainted with our practice as a whole and a wide array of individuals. As a result, your assignment at the close of the rotation program is generally mutually agreeable.

In addition, we present a professional development program that provides informative sessions on numerous of topics, including substantive practice areas, skills, ethics, marketing and more. While many of these programs are designed for all firm attorneys, some are designed specifically for lawyers just starting out in practice. All programs are available throughout our offices through video conferencing and may provide Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credit.

Mentoring

Mentoring occurs both formally and informally. Our Mentoring Program is designed to assist you in making the transition from law school or previous employment. The program is intended to provide you with: (a) feedback from experienced attorneys on developmental progress, outside of the formal review process; (b) an outlet for venting frustrations without fear of a negative outcome; (c) a developmental checkpoint for legal skills; (d) an avenue for recognizing and championing your accomplishments and successes; and (e) the perspective of experienced attorneys on the political and social nuances of our firm.

It is expected that this formal mentoring relationship will last at least one year.

Overall, the Mentoring Program is intended to promote your inclusion in the firm's endeavors and to facilitate the growth and development of a lengthy and successful career with us.

Performance Reviews

Your performance and salary are reviewed on at least an annual basis. Attorneys who work with you are asked to assess your skills and performance in several areas. Our Associate Committee reviews these evaluations and meets with you to discuss your progress. During the performance review process, an effort is made to you apprised of their progress toward becoming a member in the firm. Your endeavors in non-billable and pro bono projects are valued and taken into consideration during the performance review process.

Membership Criteria

We hire attorneys we believe have the ability and motivation to become members* of the firm.

Admission to membership is based on demonstrated ability to perform a substantial volume of legal work in a consistently excellent manner. The traits of responsibility, personality and proprietorship that determine one's ability to attract, serve and address client needs are important considerations.

Associates employed by the firm directly from law school can normally anticipate consideration for membership within six to nine years of service with the firm. We consider experience outside the firm that contributes to the associate's demonstrated ability.

We recognize that not all attorneys aspire to firm membership. Additional options, such as senior counsel, are available for attorneys who join the firm as lateral candidates.

* As a professional limited liability company (PLLC), the firm's "members" are the equivalent of "partners" in a traditional partnership.

Bond also searches for professionals who offer the same high degree of excellence and long-term commitment to success as we do for our attorneys. The firm seeks individuals who look for challenges as well as on-going professional development in their chosen field and who can contribute in a team-oriented environment in which they offer clients, whether internal or external, services of the highest caliber.

The firm’s commitment to our staff is reflected in the very low turnover rate as a result of their satisfaction and career fulfillment in such areas as accounting, information technology, marketing, as well as paralegals in a variety of practices.

Bond, Schoeneck & King offers the M. Catherine Richardson 1L Clerkship Program, open to 1L law student applicants in good standing attending ABA-accredited law schools. The purpose of this program is to provide meaningful law firm experience to aspiring first-year law students whose backgrounds and life experiences bring a needed, particularly unique perspective and/or skill set to the legal profession. Merely by way of example, a first-year student who brings uncommon cultural fluency, has had military or other significant public service experience, is from underprivileged family circumstances or overcame other barriers, has been deeply involved in charitable or community causes, has worked to create diverse, inclusive and equitable spaces or has achieved uncommon success or recognition in a particular field may bring the kind of unique personal background this clerkship is intended to champion.

The clerkship runs for ten to twelve weeks. At least one applicant will be selected for each summer. It is anticipated that the clerkship will require approximately 40 hours per week. This is a paid position.

Office location(s) hiring for the 2024 program include: Albany, Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse, NY.

Future Employment with Bond

The M. Catherine Richardson 1L Clerkship Program is entirely separate and apart from Bond’s 2L summer law clerk hiring process. A student selected for the program is not guaranteed future employment with Bond, Schoeneck & King, nor employment with us as a 2L summer clerk. However, one of our goals is to become acquainted with eligible law students who may be interested in applying for our 2L summer clerk program or employment with us after graduation. Therefore, we encourage clerkship applicants, whether selected for the M. Catherine Richardson 1L Clerkship or not, to apply for our 2L summer clerk program. Please be advised that our 2L summer clerk program has a separate application process. An application for the M. Catherine Richardson 1L Clerkship Program is not considered an application for our 2L summer clerk program or any other employment with Bond, Schoeneck & King.
