The Media and Communications Law Practice Group represents media clients in a wide range of matters of concern to newspapers, broadcast media, magazines, news services, and a variety of other organizations that disseminate information throughout New York and, from New York, to the world. We have represented media interests in Upstate New York for more than 50 years. Our clients have included national networks, national cable systems, and local TV, radio and print media. We are active in organizations that support the First Amendment and provide a "libel hotline" service for the New York Press Association.
We have long made the quality and responsiveness of our service the two features that we emphasize most to help our clients achieve their goals at minimum cost. Our experience and training enables our attorneys to respond quickly to the needs of our media clients, and to avoid the long and costly "learning time" that other lawyers less experienced in media law require to fully understand the issues. Whether assisting a client with the defense of a defamation action, gaining access to a governmental proceeding or records, the "vetting" of a feature article or news story, or with the response to a subpoena that threatens to intrude into the heart of the client's operations, we are able to draw on our extensive experience to suggest the wisest legal path to accomplish the desired result as quickly and economically as possible.
Clients of the Media and Communications Law Practice Group enjoy unhampered access to our lawyers 24 hours a day, and equivalent access to our firm's other lawyers who provide "full service" support for all aspects of the Media and Communications Law Practice Group's activities. For example, the firm's communications lawyers have advised broadcasters on a wide range of issues primarily arising under federal law, including regulations governing political advertising, indecent broadcasts, public issue broadcasting, equal employment opportunity programs, copyright and other major issues. The firm's business lawyers have represented clients in the purchase and sale of broadcast and print media companies. The firm's labor attorneys have negotiated personal service contracts with television news personnel, and advised clients regarding the enforceability of non-competition clauses in the media industry.
