Jane M. Sovern, Deputy General Counsel At City University Of New York, Joins Bond

(New York, NY): Bond, Schoeneck & King is pleased to announce that Jane M. Sovern has joined the firm’s New York City office in its higher education practice. Prior to joining Bond, Sovern served as Deputy General Counsel for The City University of New York (CUNY), a 24-campus system with over 270,000 full-time students and more than 45,000 employees.

Sovern served CUNY for more than 27 years in various positions including as Interim General Counsel and Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs. She provided legal assistance and advice to the University’s Chancellor and senior leadership, Board of Trustees, and the administrations of the constituent campuses. She was involved with legal and policy issues relating to faculty and staff, students, Title IX, campus safety, academic integrity, employment equity, labor and employment issues in a unionized environment including faculty tenure and promotion and employee misconduct, litigation, free speech, governance, internal and external investigations, risk management and compliance, New York State education and accreditation issues, and commercial transactions, among others.

Sovern received her J.D. from Columbia University and her bachelor’s degree from Brown University. Prior to her CUNY service, she was associated with the law firms of Paul, Weiss, and Meister, Leventhal & Slade. She is a Board Member of Legal Services of the Hudson Valley.
