Bond, Schoeneck & King, PLLC, a law firm of 300 attorneys in more than 30 practice and industry groups, is accepting applications for a full-time Fiduciary Tax Specialist for its Rochester, New York office to support its trusts and estates practice. This position will handle advanced fiduciary tax and estate administration matters requiring substantial knowledge of trust and estate taxation, accounting principles, and related reporting obligations. They will also serve as a technical resource to attorneys, fiduciaries, and internal team members and will be expected to exercise independent judgment in evaluating issues, identifying risks, and developing appropriate tax reporting and compliance approaches.
Position Responsibilities:
Prepare and review complex federal and state fiduciary income tax returns for trusts, estates, and related entities.
Analyze governing documents, financial records, and tax information to determine appropriate reporting positions, identify tax issues, and support estate and trust administration strategy.
Review fiduciary accountings and evaluate the tax treatment of distributions, deductions, basis adjustments, and other tax-sensitive transactions.
Work closely with attorneys on taxable estate administration, post-death tax reporting, and ongoing trust administration matters.
Analyze fiduciary accounting income, distributable net income, allocation issues, filing requirements, and available tax elections.
Identify planning opportunities arising during administration and advise on tax consequences associated with the funding, termination, and ongoing administration of trusts and estates.
Manage deadlines, maintain a high level of accuracy in technical tax work, and communicate effectively with attorneys, fiduciaries, accountants, and tax authorities.
Exercise independent judgment in recognizing when additional facts are needed, evaluating unresolved technical issues, and elevating strategic legal questions where appropriate.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, taxation, finance, or a closely related field.
Significant academic and professional training in tax and accounting principles.
Substantial experience with fiduciary income tax returns, estate and trust administration, fiduciary accountings, and related tax reporting matters.
Strong technical knowledge of federal and state fiduciary income taxation.
Demonstrated ability to analyze complex financial and tax records and apply sound professional judgment.
Ability to manage a demanding portfolio of matters with limited supervision.
Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with attorneys, fiduciaries, and other professionals.
EA, or comparable advanced tax credential a plus.
