The intellectual prowess of any university turns in part on the depth and sophistication its Ph.D. researchers and doctoral students bring to the campus. Sponsoring such research is definitively rewarding, placing the sponsor neatly within the legacy of the research. Before the legacy, however, comes the bargaining table, and sponsors should be aware that the contract negotiation process with a non-profit university is quite different than with a for-profit company or other similar vendor. The laws and regulations governing a non-profit university play a major role in the structure of the contract negotiation process. In this session, we will review the dynamics of the relationship between law and process that manifest at the bargaining table with a non-profit university.
