Pete Jones to Speak in Complimentary ELA Webinar - Campus Speech in 2020: Social Justice, Social Media, COVID-19 and an Election
September 30, 2020
By: Peter A. Jones
Social justice movements and social media activism are providing energy and avenues for students, faculty, staff and community members to be heard in institutions of higher education. Campus administrators face the challenge of providing opportunities for a robust exchange of ideas, while also ensuring the safety and security of students and protection of individual rights; all during a pandemic and in an election season. In this webinar, attorneys who regularly provide legal counsel to institutions of higher education will address these natural tensions between expression and speech on campus with safety and individual rights and address issues frequently arising in the current social and political climate.
Topics include:
- Protocols for protests, including recognizing speech rights, and safety and security in a time of enhanced public health restrictions;
- Social media activism: an institution’s role and obligations concerning hashtag activism, including challenges around doxing and complaints from alumni.
- Remote environments--when speech and expression on remote platforms collide with the purpose of the remote environment, how can an institution respond, and are there ways to reduce the likelihood of problematic issues
