Bond Successfully Assists CHPE LLC in Securing Over 600 Easements for Landmark Clean Energy Transmission Project Delivering Renewable Power to New York City

(Syracuse, NY) — Bond, Schoeneck & King PLLC (Bond) is pleased to announce its significant role in advancing one of the most transformative clean‑energy infrastructure projects in New York State history: the Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) project. The buried transmission line delivers clean, renewable hydropower from the Canadian border to the New York City area.

The CHPE project supplies 1,250 megawatts of affordable, renewable energy—enough to meet approximately 20% of New York City’s electricity needs. This clean‑energy infusion substantially supports the State’s climate mandates under the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, while improving grid reliability for millions of New York City’s residents and businesses.

Bond proudly served as CHPE’s terrestrial real property counsel throughout the acquisition and construction phases of the CHPE project. Bond’s work involved negotiation, review, and oversight of real estate transactions, including the acquisition of more than 600 easements from private landowners and, where necessary, securing real property rights through eminent domain.

Over the next 30 years, the CHPE project is projected to generate more than $17 billion in savings for New York homes and businesses through reduced wholesale electricity costs. It will also provide $1.4 billion in funding to more than 70 municipalities and nearly 60 school districts. CHPE represents the largest single increase in clean, renewable energy in New York State’s history.
