Torchbearer: A person who leads or inspires others in working toward a valued goal.

The Bond Women’s Initiative is presenting a series of interviews to highlight the careers and successes of the women attorneys of Bond: the Bond Torchbearer Spotlight. The spotlight focuses on women attorneys formerly or currently at Bond in all stages of their careers. The Torchbearer Spotlight showcases the many ways Bond women lead and inspire others in their law practice, private life, community service and/or educational experiences.

Please join us for a short “fireside chat” where we will spotlight our next Torchbearer – Amber Lawyer.

Amber is one of Bond’s leading privacy attorneys, with particular experience in consumer data privacy, including the seminal data privacy law called the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) adopted by the European Union in 2018 and emulated in many laws thereafter. Amber spearheaded the compilation of a compliance handbook to help clients navigate the unfamiliar terrain of the new regulations.

The passage of GDPR – the first domino to fall in a line of privacy laws that followed – introduced an entirely new area of the law, and Amber stood at the forefront. By the time Amber was a third-year associate, data privacy made up about 90% of her practice. She became the firm’s first full-time data privacy and cybersecurity attorney. Amber’s work became integral for clients trying to balance the intersection of data privacy, technology and transactions and Amber became one of Bond’s foremost attorneys in technology transactions. Amber is currently seconded part-time to Paychex, Inc., where she advises on cybersecurity and data privacy matters.

Amber maintains a Certified Information Privacy Professional/European credential (CIPP/E) and Certified Information Privacy Professional/United States credential (CIPP/US) through the International Association of Privacy Professionals. Last year, Bond named her deputy chair of the firm’s data privacy and cybersecurity practice – the first associate in firm history to take on the mantle. Amber also sits on the firm’s Privacy and Security Committee.

In addition, Amber serves on the Selection Committee for the Kurt Wimmer IAPP Westin Scholar Award for the Syracuse University College of Law and the board of the Syracuse City Ballet.

Bond women light the way – and we want to applaud and honor those efforts.
